Lee emigrated from Mainland China to Hong Kong in 1959. He graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a bachelor degree in civil engineering.[1]
Since his university days, he has been a labour and pro-democracy activist. During the student-led Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, he collected donations from Hong Kong and travelled to Beijing to hand-over the funds to student protesters at Tiananmen Square. He was detained by the authorities there and made to sign a confession letter before being allowed to return to Hong Kong. Since the events of 1989, Lee has remained a standing committee member of the pro-democracy group, The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China.
In 1995, Lee was elected unopposed in a byelection of the Legislative Council. He won and was re-elected four times since then. He has been a lawmaker for more than a decade, except a brief period during 1997 and 1998, when the sovereignty of Hong Kong was transferred to the People's Republic of China, and the Legislative Council temporarily became a Provisional Legislative Council, which was filled with people indirectly hand picked by Beijing.
He is married to Elizabeth Tang, the chairperson of the Hong Kong People's Alliance on WTO. They have one daughter.[1]
On 25 October 2008 Lee was collecting signatures for old age pensions when a man walked up to his table, wrote down his ID number and next to it the name of Leung Kwok-hung (Long Hair), then began turning over the tables and throwing papers on the floor.[2] He then punched Lee in the face and shoved a banana in his mouth.[3] The 58-year old attacker, surnamed Suen (孫), was then arrested by the police. [2][4] He was detained overnight in a Tuen Mun Hospital then sent to Castle Peak Hospital for psychiatric observation.[3]
